A five-day training room in Phnom Penh has produced something rarer than a workshop certificate: twelve young Cambodians with the technical skills — and the mandate — to run a national podcast series on their own terms.
The “One Cambodia” podcast project, run by DW Akademie, brings together twelve young hosts and producers to build a 32-episode series on the issues their generation actually argues about. The premise is straightforward and, in Cambodia’s media landscape, still unusual: by youth, for youth. No editorial chaperone translating young people’s concerns into an older newsroom’s language.
Among the twelve is Sreynich San, producer and host of the “Progressive Woman” podcast. She came into the training already working in audio — which makes what she took from it more telling. It was the editing craft, she says, and the newer tools that go with it, that mattered most, because those are the skills that carry straight back into the work she was already doing.
Her impatience is the part worth noting. <mark>She wants the episodes out. As she put it, she really wants the series <mark>“to release its episodes soon” so the team can start putting important topics in front of a Cambodian audience.
That impatience is the whole design of the project. Training that ends at the certificate produces confident participants. Training that ends at a publishing schedule produces broadcasters. Thirty-two episodes is a commitment to a rhythm — enough runway for the twelve to find their formats, lose the workshop stiffness, and build the audience habit that any podcast lives or dies by.
The project
The “One Cambodia” podcast sits inside two DW Akademie programmes:
• “Be part of it! Youth Empowerment as a Key to Inclusive Policy Making for Cambodia” — funded by the European Union.
• “Digital Resilience and Dialogue” — funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung, BMZ).
Both frame the same wager: that a generation given production tools and airtime will use them on questions that policy rooms tend to reach last.
Insideload will be following the series as episodes drop.
